Anam Cara
I picked up this book through the recommendation of a work colleague. Curious about what my ethnic heritage might be able to teach me about life and spirituality.
What I really enjoyed about it was that John O’Donohue really does come across as a wise “soul friend” – “Anam Cara” in Gaelic.
Throughout the book, O'Donohue explores various aspects of the human experience, such as love, death, beauty, and solitude, through the lens of Celtic spirituality. I could feel him encouraging me to embrace my inner self and find a sense of belonging and connection in the world.
O'Donohue also explores the concept of the "thin places," which are places where the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is especially thin. He encourages readers to seek out these places and to find spiritual nourishment in them.
Overall, Anam Cara is a deeply insightful and reflective book that encourages readers to cultivate a sense of connection with themselves, others, and the natural world around them. It is a beautiful exploration of Celtic spirituality and the human experience.
Favourite Quote:
“All though your life your soul takes care of you … your soul is alive and awakened, gathering, sheltering and guiding your ways and days in the world. In effect, your soul is your secret shelter.”
